The Future of Sutton Starts Here
Centrally located in the heart of West Virginia, Sutton is the county seat of Braxton County and home to fewer than 1,000 residents. Nestled along the Elk River and just below Sutton Dam and Sutton Lake, our town offers the beauty and outdoor recreation of the West Virginia mountains alongside the charm and history of a close-knit community.
Sutton Lake stretches approximately 14 miles along the Elk River and offers miles of shoreline, quiet coves, fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, and other outdoor opportunities. Just above town, Sutton Dam stands more than 200 feet high and has played an important role in flood control along the Elk, Kanawha, and Ohio River systems since its completion in 1961.
Downtown Sutton is rich in history, with a beautiful historic district featuring distinctive architecture, historic homes, and original brick streets that reflect generations of our community’s story. Visitors can also enjoy local history trails, hiking opportunities, community events, and the Elk River as it winds directly through town.
Sutton is a small town with a proud history and a renewed focus on the future. Our Town is working to strengthen neighborhoods, support local businesses, improve public spaces, and create new opportunities for residents and visitors. By working together, we can preserve the character that makes Sutton special while building a safer, stronger, and more welcoming community for generations to come.
